I know what it’s like to be cold, and to feel sad and alone. I also know what it’s like give and to receive comfort. To me, the embrace of a blanket can return me to a comforted state. But it must be wool. What is it about well-worn wool that creates an instant calm? Perhaps the connection is to childhood memories of a family long since gone—simple thoughts of simple times. But it’s also an elemental link to the generational endurance of immigrants like me who seek comfort in the familiar when faced with the strangeness of a new life.
