My mother and father grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire, as did I. They lived there all their lives.
My brother and sisters and I grew up with all the old New England homilies:
“Waste not, want not.”
“A penny saved is a penny earned.”
“Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Or do without”
“It isn’t what you make, it’s what you save.”
“A stitch in time saves nine.”
“We live in deeds, not years.”
And many more…
My mother gave me this old wool blanket after I was married. It was used on children’s twin beds. Then it lost the satin band around it. Now we use duvets, so it has been tucked away in the linen closet.
I would be honored to think my mother’s blanket will be bronzed along with many others as a sculpture near the new wing of our magnificent museum.
